How to Cast a Write-In Vote
Voting systems and ballot procedures can vary by county and polling location. Follow the instructions provided with your ballot and ask an election worker for assistance when needed.
- Go to your polling location and check in as you normally would. Ask an election worker if you need help locating information about your candidate.
- Follow the instructions provided with the voting system and ballot at your polling location.
- Locate the U.S. Senator race on your ballot.
- Select the write-in option. A registered write-in candidate’s name is not printed with the other candidate names. Ask an election worker for the certified list if you need to confirm your candidate.
- Enter the candidate’s name in the write-in field using the method provided by the voting system.
- Review the entry for your candidate and the rest of your ballot before casting it.
- Follow the voting system’s instructions to cast your completed ballot.
How Write-In Votes Are Reviewed
Texas law provides that, when write-in voting is permitted, a vote may be counted when the voter’s intent is clearly ascertainable unless another law prohibits counting it.
